First Grade Brain Juice

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

The first day of school will be here soon and so the planning begins. The first day is so crucial. I want my new firsties to have lots of fun but we also need to spend time learning our rules and procedures. We begin our day with a welcome and then we spend some time learning to unpack. We talk about our schedule for the day (they all just want to know when lunch is) and now the first hour of our day is GONE.

We then move into our Scavenger Hunt so we can make First Grade Brain Juice. We need to switch our brains from kinder brains to new and improved first grade brains and this stuff can make that happen! (The kids LOVE this activity and they talk about it all year.)

We begin our scavenger hunt with a letter from Brian the Brain. The letter welcomes the kids to First Grade and provides them instructions for our scavenger hunt. Attached to the letter is Clue 1. We read the clue, discuss the riddle and try to figure out where we should go. Once we agree on the answer to the riddle we use our iPads to scan the QR Code to be sure we are headed in the right direction.

When we reach Location 1 a bag filled with one ingredient and the next clue is waiting. As we travel through each clue we are collecting all the items needed to make our First Grade Brain Juice and the anticipation is building.

Clue 7 leads up back to our classroom where students will cut-and-glue the sequence of our hunt.  (This allows time for me to prep the Brain Juice.) When it's time to drink our juice, I encourage them to drink it fast because if it starts hurting (brain freeze) it is working! - I LOVE First Graders!

The kids have a BLAST with this activity and I am thrilled because we learned about important places in the school - I can now send them down the hall to the bathroom without worrying they will be lost.

In the afternoon, we finish this activity with a graphing sheet included in the packet. Click on the picture below to check it out!

I had a request for a Second Grade Version click on the link to see it!

B.E.E. Folder

Tuesday, June 23, 2015

Let's face it, keeping a class full of first graders organized can feel impossible - but IT CAN BE DONE! When it comes to students managing their space, I am NOT a hand-holder and I refuse to dig papers out of my students backpacks, desks or folders. I am not trying to sound harsh but there are 25+ kids and only one of me. For that reason, I teach my students how to become independent, responsible and organized using B.E.E. (Bring Everything Everyday) Folders.

I spent some time yesterday putting together my students take home folders and wanted to share with you what these look like in our class.

Each student is given a 3-ring 1 inch white view binder.  I put this cover page in the front sleeve so parents have clear directions on how to use the binder.
The color code on the front matches our behavior chart.

Inside the binder students have several things:
1. First, a zipper pencil pouch (they provide their own) to keep their Buzz Bucks. We use Buzz Bucks as a classroom reward system. Students earn $1 for every green light, $2 for blue lights and $3 for purple lights. Students earn $0 for yellow or red lights. Students use their money to shop from our Treasure Box on Friday. The prizes are sorted based on the cost of the item. The "coolness" determines the cost. :)
I do not replace lost/stolen Buzz Bucks. Students know they are responsible for keeping them safe and their zipper pouch is the place to keep them.

2. Directly behind their zipper pouch is a page protector with their Weekly Homework Calendar and Weekly Newsletter copied back-to-back. Here is an example of what our first weekly homework calendar and newsletter looks like. At the end of the day, students color the box on their Homework Calendar to show what color light they earned. I have a space for behavior notes if needed and parents can look at the front of the folder to see the behavior color code.
We send weekly homework calendars to allow students/parents more flexibility.
This page stays in their BEE folder for the entire week.

3. Next is a laminated Handwriting Helper. This is copied back-to-back on cardstock paper. This stays in their folder at all times for quick reference. We use Spalding handwriting and it is very specific so this a helpful tool for parents and students to use when working on homework.

3. Next students have their Sight Word List in a page protector. I have 20 Frye Word Lists that students progress through at their own pace. The list stays in their folder to practice nightly as part of their reading homework. When students are fluently reading the list of words, their parents sign the bottom and return it to school. They read the list to me (or a parent helper) I write the date they passed the list on the page pictured below and slide their next list into their page protector.
Students are SUPER motivated to pass their Word Lists because they earn $5 in Buzz Bucks for each list they pass!

4. Finally the back pocket has their Decodable Reader or Take-Home Reader envelope. I have found the most reading growth occurs when I provide students with books at their reading level rather than asking them to choose a book from home. We copy and send home our Journeys Decodable Readers for students. Most weeks have 4 readers to accompany the story so students get a new decodable reader each day.
I don't want to copy and staple these books every year so we store them in a manila envelope to keep them safe. The label on the front of the envelope provides instructions for parents and let's parents know that the book is school property and needs to be returned.

AND that's it!

That is how I keep my first graders organized and responsible for their own materials. Yes, there is a little prep-work involved and some training with students (and parents) but year after year I have helped my students become organized and taught them to INDEPENDENTLY care for their work using this system.

I have posted our BEE Folders on TpT if you think this is something that could help your class. I included an editable cover page, the Sight Word Cover Page, all 20 Frye Word Lists, Buzz Bucks in $1, $5, $10 and $20 denominations and an editable Take-Home Reader label.

Our Busy Week One

Saturday, July 26, 2014

Week 1 is finished and although I had pre-first day nightmares that looked like this
I survived, they did not manage to tie me up, and we had an awesome first week of school. This is an exciting year for my family because...look at my big first grader! My oldest is in first grade and so that means I get to see her even more during the day. No, she is not in my class. (That would be REALLY bad.) But, she has the best teacher and she is loving school and she is right next door, YAY!
This week flew by, we were crazy busy trying to squeeze in as many rules and procedures as possible. I always forget how young they are at the beginning of the year. On Monday at about 9:15 (45 minutes into the day) I had a kiddo ask me if it was almost time to go home. Oh honey, its going to be a LONG day! HA!

Here is a little look at our week, I tried to make sure I took lots of pictures so I could share with you. Monday we began our Back to School book. I LOVE this book and students/parents do too!
The first page is "Meet My Teacher" where the students draw a picture of their new teacher and write something they have learned about him/her. I created a little Around the Room activity to help. Great first day activity since they are so WIGGLY!

All About My Teacher! Editable PDF Around the Room

On Tuesday we began Readers Workshop. We read for a whole 5 minutes, WOO HOO! We are going to build up our reading stamina slowly. My book boxes are from Really Great Stuff, my teaching neighbor showed me these awesome clear labeling pockets from Lakeshore and I created this editable PDF for the labels. These labels are FREE for Facebook Fans. Simply like my page to download them, click on the tab on the right to get there.

My week started to get a little blurry on Wednesday, it was 113 degrees so that means no outdoor activity.
No outdoor activity = rainy day schedule = NOOOO!!!!!!!
We made the best of it and started working on our No, David art.

Thursday, oh Thursday. My little one had enough by Thursday, we slept in over the summer and she is having a hard time changing her sleeping schedule.
Thursday was another hot one at 114 degrees so again, no outdoor activity. Oh my! We finished out Back to School book on Thursday and sent it home.

Friday was crazy hot again but I can put up with just about anything because IT IS FRIDAY! We brainstormed the classroom rules and did the writing to accompany our David art. They turned out so cute! This is by far one of my favorite bulletin boards of the year. The David art and Writing page is a free download in my TpT store. Several people have asked about the poster, I am trying to clear this with David Shannon because I don't want to violate copyright. If/When I hear back with permission I will make it available.

Next week we get to begin our NEW Journeys Reading Series and we are starting with the story "What is a Pal?" I am super excited about this new series. I have created a ton of stuff to use next week. We are going to begin our Interactive Notebooks and Literacy Stations. I am looking forward to sharing more with you!

Now I am off to bed and I am looking forward to enjoying my Sunday with my family.

Week One Here We Come!

Saturday, July 19, 2014

Well teacher week is OVER and students begin on Monday. We had a crazy amount of professional development this week and my head is spinning with all the new changes.

I wanted to share a little about what I have planned for the first week of school but before I get to that I wanted to show you my new ETSY purchases.
I LOVE ETSY! (I spend way too much money during summer breaks!)
I bought the wine tumblers from Lulu's Goodies. I bought one for each of my awesome teammates. Lulu was amazing she even personalized them FOR FREE and gave me a discount because I ordered 5! So cute and believe me I will put this tumbler to use next week! :)

I also purchased a new lanyard and SewMuchDetail. It has little bees on it to match my classroom. Sandee had my order shipped in less than 48 hours and I love it!

Finally, I bought a new sign for my door and I am in LOVE! Lisa from LisaBees is amazing, she makes the cutest personalized signs. She has a million designs to choose from and my new sign is  beautiful, durable and just perfect!

I also did a little Back to School clothing shopping at White House Black Market. I added these cute items to my wardrobe. Best news ever - they were all on clearance! My favorite is the dress on the right, I wore it to Meet Your Teacher, so cute!

So like I said before, Monday is our first day of school. We don't start our reading series or Literacy Station the first week so we fill our time by learning rules and procedures and working on our Back to School books. When the completed book goes home at the end of the week, parents learn so much about our class including: our specials schedule, daily classroom schedule, our school VIP's, our class boy/girl ratio, student ages, first grade expectations, they can see a class picture and so much more!

Day One (or two because I always over-plan) my students are going to learn all about me with this fun little Around the Room activity. I try to cram in as many activities as possible that allow for some movement because WOW are they wiggly at the beginning of the year! I recently learned how to make an editable pdf and now I am a *little* addicted! Simply download and add your text by clicking and typing in each box! You can grab this activity here.

Finally, we are going to learn school rules with a little help from my favorite author David Shannon. I LOVE his book David Goes to School so I created a little craftivity and writing page to accompany it. You can find my David Goes to School FREEBIE by clicking on the link. (I will post pictures at the end of the week. In the meantime, check out last years pics by clicking here.)

Good luck to everyone who starts school this week!

Hersheys Candybar Wrapper!

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

Yay! I created my first editable PDF!
Sorry this is going to be the quickest post ever because although it is only Tuesday night, this is proving to be the longest week ever! Teachers are back to school this week and we have a CRAZY amount of professional development this year
 - AND -
I have Meet Your Teacher/Curriculum Night on Thursday evening! I wanted to quickly stop by to  share my cover page and matching Hershey's candy bar wrapper with you all.
Since we combine Meet Your Teacher with Curriculum Night I have a TON of information to give to new parents and the kids are required to sit and listen so the candy bar is very helpful! :)
The coverpage is editable so you can insert your School, Room Number, Name, Year, etc... the back of the candy bar says "I am looking forward to a wonderful year with you! (heart) ________" My students are always so excited about these candy bars and I know your kiddos will be too!

A Week in Rewind - July 26th

Sunday, July 28, 2013

Hey All! I survived the first week! As always, it was a little crazy, mixed with some fun but totally and completely exhausting! I meant to get to this blog post earlier today but felt it was crucial to sneek a nap in before the madness begins again tomorrow.

I wanted to highlight for you some of the fun we had this week.

It would not be the first week without tons of time being devoted to the rules and procedures. There is no one better suited to teach your students how not to behave at school than David in the book David Goes to School! We spent lots of time discussing David's behavior and how it could be changed so that he would look like a "real first grader". The kids helped me brainstorm some rules that David must learn and follow. Then they choose three rules to write for David. Next we did this fun little craftivity that somehow always seems to resemble the child who created it!

This craftivity is a FREEBIE in my TpT store. Click here to get it! I also have the editable poster available for your class, click here to get it!

We also worked on our "Back to School" book. I LOVE this book and so many parents appreciate it too! Parents have told me so many times how much they LOVE this book and consider it a first grade keepsake. You can check out the book here.
This book takes us the entire week to complete. (We do not do literacy stations the first week so this is a great activity for that time period.) When the completed book goes home students/parents have reference to our specials schedule, daily classroom schedule, our school's VIP's, graphs with information about our classes boy/girl ratio, how many students are 5, 6 or 7 a class picture and much more! (There is also a second grade version of this book!)
We also did several activities from Abby's Fun with Firsties packet. We enjoyed some Jitter Juice and her Find a Friend Icebreakers Activities.
The highlight of my week has been being able to take my daughter to school with me. We do not live in the school district I teach in but I decided to bring her to my school this year. I love being able to see her around school and check on her at lunch. Here we are in our matching school shirts on Friday. (forgive the horrible hair, pony tails are a MUST when it is 109 degrees!)
Awesome first week, glad it is over and we can get into our real routine. Next week we are getting busy with our Harcourt reading. I will be back to share some of our adventures next week!

Back To School

Sunday, July 15, 2012

Believe it or not, I go back to school this week! This week is a teacher week and the kids start next Monday. This summer went SO fast and I am going to really miss spending lazy days with my daughter! BUT I am excited to meet my new first graders and get them excited about this year. I try to keep them busy the first week and help them learn our routines by making a "Back to School" book. Parents have told me so many times how much they LOVE this book and consider it a first grade keepsake. You can check out the book here.
This book takes us about a week to complete. (We do not do literacy stations the first week so this is a great activity for that time period.)
When the completed book goes home students/parents have reference to our specials schedule, daily classroom schedule, our school's VIP's, graphs with information about our classes boy/girl ratio, how many students are 5, 6 or 7 a class picture and much more!
Check back later this week, I will be posting some Meet Your Teacher Forms as freebies!
